Court Case - 2023 02 22 Yacht released in Cape Town

2023 02 22 Yacht released in Cape Town

Dateline: 2023 02 22: CAPE TOWN, WESTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA
THE SUPERYACHT, BLUE SHADOW, HAS BEEN OFFICIALLY RELEASED BY THE SHERIFF OF THE COURT IN CAPE TOWN

According to my legal representatives, during the course of last week, Teodorin Nguema Obiang, Vice President of Equatorial Guinea petitioned the Sheriff of the Court seeking the immediate release of the superyacht, Blue Shadow, stating that the vessel was a military asset belonging to the Equatorial Guinea Defense Force and threatened to act with 'reciprocity' against South Africa in Equatorial Guinea.

The superyacht was seized on the 7th of February in Cape Town harbour in relation to my ongoing legal dispute with the Vice President regarding the outstanding payment of damages awarded to me after a lengthy court battle associated with my false imprisonment at Black Beach prison between 2013 and 2015.

My legal team have confirmed that the superyacht, which is now sailing under the flag of the Cayman Islands, was subsequently released at 01h00 on Tuesday, 21 February 2023 but remains in port taking aboard fuel and supplies in readiness for its departure.

VICE PRESIDENT’s SUPERYACHT SEIZED BY SOUTH AFRICAN BUSINESSMAN

Dateline: 2023 02 07: CAPE TOWN, WESTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA
Legal representatives acting on behalf of Daniel Janse van Rensburg have seized Blue Shadow, a luxurious multimillion dollar superyacht, belonging to the Vice President of Equatorial Guinea, Teodorin Nguema Obiang at
Cape Town harbour.

On Tuesday, February 7, 2023, Blue Shadow, an impressive 67m yacht belonging to the Vice President of Equatorial Guinea, Teodorin Nguema Obiang docked in Cape Town harbour and was seized by South African businessman, Daniel Janse van Rensburg.

Daniel was imprisoned on trumped up charges for 491 days in Black Beach; a prison described by the United Nations Human Rights Watch as the worst prison in the world. Upon his release in 2015, Daniel returned to his home in South Africa and began the long process of recovery from the ordeal.

In 2016, Daniel instituted legal proceedings at the Cape High Court against Teodorin Nguema Obiang for having orchestrated his detention and subsequent torture at the infamous prison in Malabo on Bioko Island in Equatorial Guinea. In 2021 Janse van Rensburg was finally vindicated and Obiang was ordered to pay close to R40 million in damages.

In execution of this claim, the Sheriff of the Court attached and sold all the furniture from Obiang’s residences in Clifton and Bishopscourt and filed an application in the High Court to sell both properties. In September 2022, a book detailing Daniel’s experiences was released by Penguin and during this time Daniel has been embroiled in a protracted legal battle to claim the settlement awarded by the courts as Teodorin Nguema Obiang’s lawyers stalled the process by lodging numerous appeals against the judgement. The most recent attempt was dismissed at the Cape Town High Court in January 2023.

On Tuesday, February 07, 2023, Daniel, through the Sheriff of the Court, attached Obiang’s

Superyacht “Blue Shadow” in Cape Town harbour and will be putting the yacht up for
auction.
